Protect your business from the growing risk of attack

Cyber crime has increased exponentially over the part couple of years. Especially since the COVID pandemic resulted in a lot of businesses adapting to new measures and employees working remotely.

Cyber crime now runs as a service, with the use of Botnets, Ransomware, The Darkness and Crypto-hacking. Cyber criminals are now using new technologies to pose harm and threats to people and companies world wide.

In June 2021, 700 million users of the networking platform LinkedIn had their data leaked and posted for sale on the Dark Web. This data exposure impacted 92% of 756 million users. The hacker "God User" boasted that they were selling a database of 700 million LinkedIn accounts. Cybercrime study found that criminals are adapting their attack methods by targeting the human layer — the weakest link in cyber defence — through increased ransomware with phishing and social engineering attacks as a path to entry.

IMB state on their ‘Cost Of Data Breach Report in 2021’ that they saw the highest average cost rise of a data breach in 17 years. Costs from $3.86 million rising to US $4.24 million on an annual basis.

The dramatic increase of cyber crime and attacks demonstrate why cyber security is an increasing worry on a national scale for the Government and firms in the UK and Europe. So much so the UK Government released a policy paper in November 2016 called the ‘National Cyber Strategy.’ Which has since been newly published in December 2021 for 2022 bringing the policy in line with recent technological updates and figures.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

The European Data Protection Regulation became applicable as of 25th May 2018. The GDPR is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy in the Europe. They are regulations to ensure companies are sufficiently protecting any data they may store.

Any company operating in the EU must comply with rules governing the use of the data collected and stored – or face a fine of up to 4% of global turnover.

Since the introduction of the Regulations British Airways (BA) have faced a record fine of £183 million and Marriott Hotel Group faced a fine of £99 million due to serious breaches in the Protection Regulation.

The Future of Cyber Security Birmingham 2022 will offer executives the opportunity to hear about best practice approaches to the new regulation in terms of technology and strategy. We will examine how much work has already been completed by businesses adapting and what they have incorporated over the past 3 years since the development of the GDPR. Ensuring to leave executives with some sturdy quick-fire tips.
